Right to Dissent Art Exhibition | Films | Panel Discussion | Performance

Dear All

TODAY at 630PM an area at the end of one of the corridors at Clark House, in Mumbai will be enmeshed creating a space of roughly 5 feet x 3 feet with a toilet at one end. Tushar Joag will spend the 6 days till the 30th of May in this cocoon like space without access to the outside world; there will only be a gap through which food and water can be passed in. He will spend all his waking hours filling out school notebooks with the words “I will not lose faith in the Indian Judiciary and Democracy”. Wings of democracy, a butterfly of words, drawn onto a peeling wall, are the fragile utopia on the other side of what traps us.

“Why do I write these lines… am I being punished for thinking that I do not believe in the Indian Democracy and the Judiciary? Is that sedition? Is this what we will (mis)lead our future generation to think about the meaning of democracy?” says Tushar Joag

There will also be notebooks available for visitors to write the same line as many times as they want. People from everywhere are invited to do the same and post the filled out notebooks to
504 Harmony, Film City Road, opposite Shagun Shopping Centre, Goregaon East, Bombay-63.

All the collected notebooks and the ones filled out by him will be posted to the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Veerappa Moily.

Clark House is a collaborative practice about a place, that while sharing a junction with two museums, is alternative to them perhaps, but also their mirror by virtue of its location. It is also an old shipping office of the Thakur Shipping Company, that had links to countries in the Middle East, Eastern Europe the ex-Soviet Union and Japan. Run by two brothers Chatturbhuj and Madanmohan Sharma participated in an internationalism based on the principles of the Non-Aligned Movement. It served as a pharmaceutical research office, and housed one of India’s first IBM processors. The introduction of the Macademia nut in India came through this office. Presently it serves as the office of a family concern engaged in the cultivation of tea, pharmaceuticals and trade. Though based in Bombay, it has strong links to Bihar and Kerela. Curatorial interventions in the space hope to continue, differenty, this history of internationalism and innovative research. Four people are part of this collaborative, Nida Ghouse, Zubin Pastakia, Zasha Colah and Sumesh Sharma.

Panel Discussion – Urban Environment – Threats, Challenges & Opportunities June 3

As a part of ECO Fest – Mocha TreeHugger’s World Environment Day celebration in association with The Root – we hope to revoke the idea of “your environment” through a panel discussion on the Urban Environment – Threats, Challenges & Opportunities.

This discussion will throw light on the relationship that ‘we’ the urban dwellers have with the city. The panel will include Kavita Mukhi, Rahul Srivastava, Kaiwan Mehta & Darryl D’monte, who are eminent citizens of Mumbai and have been addressing their concerns around the rapidly changing landscape of the city.

The aim is to address thought provoking questions like:
Are we paying too big a price in the name of urbanization? With shrinking public spaces, lack of direct engagement with nature, fast depleting heritage properties & absence of community participation in city related issues, have we taken our city for granted? What challenges we might be facing in the future & how well are we prepared?

This panel discussion hopes to bring forth a constructive re-look at “our environment” & the way ahead.

The New Ark Mission of India – Bangalore

The New Ark Mission of India has marked a turning point for the destitute people of India. It has laid a true foundation for the transformation of lives of those on the streets. We are greatly honored to present this website to bring to light the work of this organization to a local and a global audience.

Mission
To rescue the destitute and the dying people from the streets.
To enrich their lives with hope and purpose.
To provide them shelter, care and medication.
To impart education for children rescued from the streets.
To rescue 1000 lives by the year 2010.
To empower such individuals with vocational training so as to enable them to become self-supporting and self reliant.
To improve basic amenities offered to the residents so that they would lead a fulfilled, noble life and death.
To catalyze overall development of the homeless people, NAMI hopes to collaborate with mainstream institutions (both corporate and not-for-profit organizations) that are willing to provide support through finance, medical care, education and volunteers to help support the mission and vision of the organization.
To open the ‘Home of Hope’ Centre in each and every state across the country.
To transform the nation with greater and stronger values of service towards the underprivileged.

Vocational
We could certainly use individuals or teams that can impart some kind of vocational training to our residents. There are several that can benefit from learning some trade that they can use to make a living and gain some independence. Perhaps they can be taught how to make small handicraft items that can be sold and the income used to fund the ongoing work at Home of Hope. If any of you owns a “small scale industry” that can “outsource” some light manual labour, we can consider taking on these kinds of projects.

Volunteer Now
We would be honoured if you can lend us a helping hand at our Home of Hope. Be a part of the rescuing team or volunteer to help around the campus, its your choice and the experience you will share with our residents will change your life forever. They will be privileged to enjoy your company and learn from you.

VRangers Trek To Gorakhgad on 12 June 2011

The region of Gorakhgad and Machchindragad has a dense forest cover. Fort Gorakhgad is quite small in size. It was had strategic importance during the reign of Shahaji Raje. However, no major battle is recorded to have taken place here. It was used in Shivaji’s era to patrol the nearby region and was used as a stopover station during the journey to Junnar via Naneghat. Though small in size, there is enough availability water and a lot of space for accommodation. The fort gets its name from Saint Gorakhnath, who performed his “Sadhana” in this place.
Two cisterns can be seen just after emerging through the entrance and the path climbs up further ahead. Further, a small step-way descends down to the large caves that are carved out in the main rock of the pinnacle. Nature’s grandeur can be appreciated here with the magnificent view of two large frangipani trees leaning over the valley and the excellent sight of Machchindragad. There are in total fourteen cisterns on the fort, however, only the three tanks near to the cave have potable water. There is a small Mahadeo temple with Nandi.
