Support A Cause! NCPA and VIDYA present: Vision of Forever Thursday, June 30

NCPA in collaboration with VIDYA presents a spectacular evening to light up the lives of many. In a show of both warmth and fervour, watch Malaysia-based Odissi exponent Ramli Ibrahim perform his breathtaking production Vision of Forever, to raise funds for the education and empowerment of less privileged children across the country.

26 years ago, VIDYA was created on a verandah at IIT Delhi with six children from the nearby slums. Since then, it has transformed the lives of over 2,00,000 families through its programmes. The performance exemplifies the works of the late Odissi pioneer Deba Prasad Das. It unleashes powerful images from the Shaivite and Tantric traditions, bringing out the terrifying beauty associated with the repertoire of Ramli’s late guru. The work focuses on the spiritual awakenings of an acolyte who eventually encounters the vision of glory of the universal spirit through dance.

In Vision of Forever, Ibrahim has chosen an Odissi repertoire from three major gurus of this tradition: Durga Charan Ranbir, Gajendra Kumar Panda and Deba Prasad Das.

Most of the works were commissioned by Sutra over the past 25 years and will feature Sutra’s principal dancers: Rathimalar, Geethika Sree, Nishah Devi, Michelle Chang, Thrisherna and Guna. The focal point of Vision of Forever will be the Ardhanariswara performed by Ramli and Rathimalar.

NCPA Nad Ninad: A Guided Listening Session on Shobha Gurtu June 24

This is a programme that makes available to lovers of Hindustani classical music, some of NCPA’s archival recordings. This month, it’s the music of the late Thumri Queen Shobha Gurtu.

With equal command over pure classical and light classical idiom, Shobha Gurtu created a new style of rendering semi classical forms such as thumri, dadra, kajri and hori.

Grammy Award winner Anjelique Kidjo @ NCPA March 11th 2011

The Benin-born star Angelique Kidjo, called “Africa’s premier diva” by Time Magazine, is the continent’s most internationally celebrated female musical exponent. She is a Grammy Award-winning, much celebrated singer, composer and performer.

Kidjo’s striking voice, stage presence, exceptional energy in the music scene (with her recordings, tours and philanthropic work) and her fluency in multiple cultures and languages won respec…t from her peers and reached people around the world. She sings in four languages.

While her genre of music is largely identified as African and World, Kidjo has her reservations on the labels applied to music. Among many other gigs where she mesmerised audiences on countless stages, she did a fantastic performance for the 2010 FIFA World Cup kick-off concert in South Africa. She has collaborated with artistes like Bono, Peter Gabriel, Joss Stone, Carlos Santana, Ziggy Marley and Antibalas.

In her new album Oyo, Kidjo revisits the music that was instrumental in her artistic formation in Benin, the country whose communist dictatorship she fled in the early ‘80s. In this album, she even reinterprets a song from a Bollywood film (Dil Main Chuppa Ke Pyar Ka).
