Ashtanga yoga is a system of yoga transmitted to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915-2009). This method of yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures—a process producing intense internal heat and a profuse, purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.

It is a vigorous, athletic style of practice. It appeals to those who like a sense of order and who like to do things independently. The series of about 75 poses takes an hour and a half to two hours to complete, beginning with sun salutations as a warm up (surya namaskars A and surya namaskars B) and moving to standing postures, seated postures, back ends, and inversions before relaxation. Strength, stamina and sweat are the hallmarks of an Ashtanga class.

Since the practice is quite high-energy, as well as being physically demanding, it will appeal to those looking for a physical challenge. Those that enjoy tangible progress will probably also enjoy Ashtanga, since completing the same sequence every time can make even small improvements in your practice more notable. It is a challenging practice but also fully accessible to first timers!

Iyengar Yoga, created by B. K. S. Iyengar, is a form of Hatha Yoga known for its use of props, such as belts, blocks, and blankets, as aids in performing asanas (postures). The props enable students to perform the asanas correctly, minimising the risk of injury or strain, and making the postures accessible to both young and old. The development of strength, mobility and stability are emphasized through the asanas.

Iyengar Yoga, systematized by B.K.S. Iyengar is firmly on the traditional eight limbs of yoga as expounded by Patanjali in his Yoga Sutras.

A form of Hatha Yoga, it focuses on the structural alignment of the physical body through the development of asanas. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being.

Iyengar Yoga is characterized by great attention to detail and precise focus on body alignment. Iyengar pioneered the use of “props” such as cushions, benches, blocks, straps and sand bags, which function as aids allowing beginners to experience asanas more easily and fully than might not otherwise be possible without several years of practice. Props also allow elderly, injured, tired or ill students to enjoy the benefits of many asanas via fully “supported” methods requiring less muscular effort.

Standing poses are emphasized in Iyengar Yoga. They are said to build strong legs, increase general vitality, and improve circulation, coordination and balance, ensuring a strong foundation for study of more advanced poses.

Unlike more experiential approaches where students are encouraged to independently “find their way” to the asanas by imitating the teacher, an Iyengar Yoga class is highly verbal and precise, with misalignments and errors actively corrected.

Kundalini Yoga consists of active and passive asana-based kriyas, pranayama, and meditations which target the whole body system (nervous system, glands, mental faculties, chakras) to develop awareness, consciousness and spiritual strength.

Kundalini Yoga, at its highest form, is practiced for the purpose of attaining bliss, opening the heart center, developing power, serving others, attaining self-realization and ultimately merging into God consciousness.

The Yoga House food concept is based on cutting-edge macrobiotic recipes rooted in ancient dietary wisdom and traditions.

• Our delicious, highly energizing meals nourish the body and mind while complementing and enhancing the effects of Yoga. The menu centers around whole cereal grains, seeds and nuts, and local, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

• Whole cereals grains provide sustained energy via complex carbohydrates, and contain protein and high amounts of vitamins and minerals.

• Seeds and nuts are potent sources of protein and also highly nutritious fats and essential fatty acids.

• Because we serve much of our fruits and vegetables raw, they are actually living foods with active living enzymes. This means they are easier to digest and full of essential vitamins and minerals.

• We prepare our food with great care, attention to details and positive outcome. For example, we soak our seeds, nuts and grains in water before using them in our recipes. This procedure initiates the germination process, thereby rendering these foods much easier to digest and potent with raw energy. We typically cook with coconut oil because its high saturated fat content makes it extremely heat-stable without the free radical formation associated with other common cooking oils. Our desserts feature various fruit-based sweeteners for a satisfying treat without the metabolic damage caused by sugar. These are some of the many examples of our commitment to truly health-supportive foods.
From the ancient and royal culture of north India, come the Khansa pots in which we serve our meals. ‘Khansa’ is a handmade vessel, in a studied mixture of copper and tin – the specific combination in this metal provides needed minerals to the body. Eating from vessels of this metal also has these added benefits: Khansa strengthens the liver, purifies the blood, promotes the white blood cell count (WBC) and therefore, wholly, increases the body’s immunity against ill-health and disease.
At The Yoga House, not only will you enjoy the sensual delights of our recipes, you will also enjoy their profound healing and nourishing effects.
